Size, weight, and power are each a tax on the vehicle in some way. Higher size and weight are not just idle variables. The issue is not just added mass but added mass aloft on vehicle or vessel. Higher mass at higher elevation increases instability and the dynamic moments imposed on the truss and hull or mast and vehicle. The maritime domain is particularly receptive to the low SWaP / high performance combination where a heavier radar suite does not merely increase topweight but multiplies the dynamic loads transmitted into the mast and hull during vessel motion.

Moreover, the dominant penalty of heavier radars in a raised installation is increased overturning and bending moment due to mass acting at height under wave-induced acceleration. Similar forces are exerted on land vehicles, expressed as reduced rollover margin, mount/chassis fatigue, greater body roll and load transfer, and degraded handling and pointing stability. Low SWaP is the difference between “manageable with careful structure design” and “mission-limiting topweight problem.”
